Artist Statement

For me, the act of painting represents an exchange of healing, as I process memories I reconnect familial relations and navigate my place within those renewed connections. I am devoted to my practice as a way to preserve and document my paternal lineage while placing myself as the leading matriarch within my painted narratives. I engage in conversations with my relations and friends of theirs, as well as use online archives to reassemble memories of my family and archive my Métis and Cree histories. Using intimate interior settings, I disclose alternative spaces where Indigenous ways of being are formed. The inclusion of personal belongings and spaces are used to stage a compelling depiction of long-established Indigenous principles located in a contemporary, urban household.
